What is Skinbase IPL?
The Skinbase IPL system is a medically CE certified system.
IPL or Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is a cosmetic skin treatment. It can be used to reduce the signs of ageing, remove unwanted hair from your body, reduce the appearance of scars, lightening darker patches of skin, acne, and improve the appearance of spider veins.
How does it work?
The treatment uses specific wavelengths of light to provide a range of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. IPL treatment is different to laser based therapies that only produce a single wavelength of light and can therefore only treat a specific condition. IPL reaches the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis) which means the treatment causes less damage to your skin.
Using a handheld device, your therapist is able to target multiple wavelengths of light onto your skin. The light heats up the cells in your skin and breaks them down which prompts your body to remove the damaged tissue naturally.
How can it remove hair?
When used for hair reduction the light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair and is converted into heat. This damages the follicle making it unable to support further hair growth. The number of treatments required will vary but you should expect to see significant results within 3-6 treatments. A full course of 6 to 10 treatments may be required to achieve long lasting results. Treatments should be no more than every 3-4 weeks on each area being treated.
We offer a comprehensive 20-minute consultation and patch test for £20.00
If you go on to have a course of treatments this amount will be completely reimbursed against your treatment fees.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

We can effectively reduce the appearance of vascular lesions such as thread veins, birthmarks or so-called ‘port wine stain marks’ on the face and body using our safe and painless SkinBase IPL technology.
IPL therapy treats the area by emitting wavelengths of light that are filtered to target the haemoglobin in the thread veins or broken capillaries. The treatment causes the vein to gradually break down over a number of days until it has disappeared. Only 1 or 2 treatments are usually required at 2-3 week intervals.
The IPL system releases yellow, green and red light that is emitted in a series of short pulses. This destroys the bacteria that live in the skin and cause inflammation, while the red light directly targets the overactive sebaceous glands that cause outbreaks of pustules.
The light also stimulates collagen production in the area helping to improve the appearance acne scarring, and is a safe and effective way to treat acne breakouts.
Our skin rejuvenation therapies aim to reverse the effects of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and sun damage to give you back that youthful looking skin free of blemishes, scarring & broken capillaries. Your skin over the face and neck will be exposed to a special pulsed light which stimulates the area beneath the skin, prompting it to renew cells.
The SkinBase™ Therapist will determine your individual needs and devise a treatment plan to achieve the results that you require. Treatments plans can vary from 6-10 treatments for hair reduction 4-6 weeks apart, to 3-4 treatments 2-3 weeks apart for IPL Advanced Treatments.
For hair reduction treatments, hair should be shaved 24-48 hours prior to treatment. This allows a 1-2 mm stubble, ideal for an effective treatment. The treatment area should be cleaned and dried before treatment commences. Dry, shaven and clean skin means that the light can penetrate the skin unobstructed.
Once the area is prepped your SkinBase therapist can begin the treatment. Our unique “Cryo” cooling handset is first applied to the treatment area. This anaesthetises the area before the light treatment. Your therapist will then move over the treatment area in a grid method using the cryo and flash handsets in tandem.
After a SkinBase™ IPL treatment it is essential to protect the skin from excessive sun exposure by applying a moisturiser with an SPF. This is especially true in the summer months and for clients that are having SkinBase™ IPL to treat pigmentation. Failure to apply regular sun cream could cause the pigmentation to return.
